Natural Reserves
Mudflats are areas of the lagoon that emerge only at low tide. They host only few plant species that are specialized at withstanding considerable variations in salinity and oxygen levels.
Saltmarshes are muddy or silty islets that generally remain uncovered by the sea and are flooded only occasionally during high tides. The vegetation here has adapted to the high salt content in the soil and is defined as halophilous.
The channels are lagoon areas with greater water flow with a greater natural or artificial depth than the surrounding lagoon. Often these are the vestigial remains of ancient river beds.
Reedbeds typically develop at the border between fresh and saltwater, such as at rivermouths. They are characterized by a vegetal association dominated by the common reed, as much as 3-4 metres high.
The river carries freshwater to the sea. This, when it reaches the rivermouth, it mixes with the saltwater, thus becoming brackish. This environment is characterized by plants able to withstand the strong variations in salinity.
Zosterisessor ophiocephalus
This species lives preferably in brackish waters, preferring muddy bottoms. It feeds on benthic invertebrates.
Emys orbicularis
Overwintering in the mud, in a state of almost total hibernation, this species feeds on snails, small crustaceans, insect larvae, molluscs, tadpoles and aquatic invertebrates.
Myocastor coypus
This is a semi-aquatic rodent mammal is native to South America. Bred for fur in Italy, escaped or released specimens have led to a significant increase in its distribution in the wild.
Anser anser
This is a nesting and migratory species in the Lagoon of Marano. It is herbivorous and active during the day. Very gregarious, during migrations flocks form the classic "V" in the sky to decrease air resistance and thus fatigue.
Circus aeruginosus
Circus aeruginosus - A fearsome predator, it feeds on birds up to the size of a teal, as well as small mammals in particular rats and voles, frogs, lizards, insects.
Aythya ferina
A diving duck, in winter it can gather in flocks of some size. It feeds mainly on seeds, roots and leaves of aquatic plants, but also on insects and larvae, molluscs, crustaceans and amphibians.
Egretta garzetta
Often confused with the great white heron, it is distinguished from the latter by its smaller size, black beak, tuft on its nape and dark legs with yellow feet. As well as fish it feeds on other small vertebrates, crustaceans, molluscs and insects.
Pelophylax esculentus
An aquatic frog about 12 cm in length. Its number has been greatly reduced due to environmental pollution. It feeds mainly on insects.
Larus michahellis
The youngsters are grey-brown in colour. It has a very broad diet, ranging from fish to birds, as well as eggs, and including small mammals and human food waste.
Anas crecca
The colour of the male is very characteristic, with the green band surrounding the eye. It feeds on seeds of aquatic plants, insects, molluscs and crustaceans, which it captures by dabbling. L'alzavola non si tuffa se non in pericolo.
Himantopus himantopus
During the flight the legs extend beyond the length of the body, giving it the elegant look to which it owes its name. It feeds on insects, crustaceans, molluscs, worms and other invertebrates.
Anas platyrhynchos
Probably the best known duck. It feeds on plants and small gastropods, insects, crustaceans and worms that it filters from the water with comb-like lamellae present on its beak.
Phoenicopterus roseus
As its name suggests, this is the largest living species of flamingo, with an average height of 110-150 centimetres. It feeds on algae and small insects, molluscs and crustaceans, filtering the water.
Ardea purpurea
This species feeds on fish, amphibians, insects, crustaceans and molluscs, but also small mammals, snakes and lizards. It is usually active at dusk and dawn.
Chroicocephalus ridibundus
This species usually nests on the ground, amongst grasses. It is omnivorous and often has the habit of stealing food from other birds and even members of its own species.
Calidris alpina
Flocks of this species often twist and turn, making coordinated evolutions in flight. It feeds on insects, molluscs, arachnids and a few plant foods that it finds below the tide line.
Numenius arquata
The curlew is characterized by its unsual thin and downcurved beak, with which it captures small invertebrates in the mud, but also crabs and worms.
Vulpes vulpes
These are small to medium sized canids, usually solitary predators that feed on small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and eggs
Sterna hirundo
Also called the "sea swallow" because of its particularly agile manner of flight and its swallow-tail. It is characterized by spectacular dives when hunting fish.
