Aquaculture

Two different types of aquaculture are carried out in Marano Lagunare: shellfish fisheries in the lagoon and “vallicoltura” fish farming. Shellfish fisheries are run in areas granted as a concession by the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. In these fisheries, giant clams are farmed and harvested by 20 metre-long boats. These boats pull along a basket that rests on the lagoon bed, scraping the sediment that has been stirred up by strong jets of water, using an appropriately-sized mallet to catch the product, which is then washed and taken aboard.
